Understanding What God Anointed Jesus to Do

Before I address what God anointed Jesus to do, I want to make sure you know when he was anointed. The four Gospels agree on this; below is the account of Mark 1:9-11:

Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan. And immediately, coming up from

the water, he saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon him

like a dove. Then a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

That was the moment Jesus became “The Anointed One” (“The Christ”) and “The Son of God.” Jesus announced what God anointed him to do at his hometown synagogue in Nazareth. The account of his announcement is found in Luke 4:16-21.

So Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the Shabbat, and stood up to read. And he was handed the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. And when he had opened the scroll, he found the place where it was written:

“The Spirit of Yahweh is upon me, because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the year of favor of Yahweh.”

Then he closed the scroll, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he said to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

The words Jesus read are found in Isaiah 61:1-2a. This is what God anointed him to do.

Preach the gospel to the poor.

Heal the brokenhearted.

Proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind.

Set at liberty those who are oppressed.

Proclaim the year of favor of Yahweh.

Now we can update our understanding of the words “Jesus the Anointed One.”

Jesus – The One called by God to preach the gospel to the poor, heal the brokenhearted, proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, set at liberty those who are oppressed, and proclaim that the year of favor of Yahweh has begun – Son of God.

Is W.W.J.D. – What Would Jesus Do – important to you? Now you have a much more accurate understanding about what he had been anointed to do. Before you read this series of emails about the meaning of “Jesus Christ Son of God,” did you understand what those words meant to him and his Jewish followers? Very few readers of English translations do. In my next email I will explain the meaning of “Son of God.”

Shalom,

Jim Myers

Why did they lay their coats at Saul's feet?

The witnesses, laying their coats at the feet of Saul, were the men that would cast the first stones at Stephen in Acts 7. Why did they all lay their coats at Saul’s feet? The Talmud contains a very interesting account of the act of stoning that may provide the answer. “When the trial was over, they take him [the condemned person] out to be stoned. The place of stoning was at a distance from the court, as it is said, ‘Take out the one who has cursed.’ [i] A man stands at the entrance of the court; in his hand is a signaling flag [Hebrew   sudarin = sudar , ‘scarf, sweater’]. A horseman was stationed far away but within sight of him. If one [of the judges] says, ‘I have something [more] to say in his favor,’ he [the signaler] waves the   sudarin , and the horseman runs and stops them [from stoning him]. Even if [the condemned person] himself says, ‘I have something to say in my favor,’ they bring him back, even four of five times, only provided that there is some substance to...

Human Lives are Valued more than Religious Institutions and Rituals

Human lives are valued more than religious institutions and rituals by the unnamed god in the first account in Genesis . That message is repeated throughout the  Hebrew Scriptures  and the  teachings of Jesus  in the  Synoptic Gospels. The Moment the Humans Created Shame in the Garden in Eden

For readers of most English translations, this is a story about two naked people who didn’t know they were naked until they ate the forbidden fruit . The reason God told them to not eat that fruit was because he didn’t want them to know they were naked or he was testing their obedience to him . As I pointed out in earlier emails, the serpent wasn’t Satan and this was not a battle between God and Satan over the souls of all people who will ever live. So what did the original author of the story want his readers to learn? Continue to read at - https://mailchi.mp/3e270c10e81d/the-moment-the-humans-created-shame-in-the-garden-in-eden
