Before
I address what God anointed Jesus to do, I want to make sure you know when he
was anointed. The four Gospels agree on this; below is the account of Mark
1:9-11:
Jesus was baptized by
John in the Jordan. And immediately, coming up from
the water, he saw the
heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon him
like a dove. Then a
voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well
pleased.”
That
was the moment Jesus became “The Anointed One” (“The Christ”)
and “The Son of God.” Jesus announced what God anointed him to do
at his hometown synagogue in Nazareth. The account of his announcement is found
in Luke 4:16-21.
So Jesus
came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as his custom was, he went
into the synagogue on the Shabbat, and stood up to read. And he was handed the
scroll of the prophet Isaiah. And when he had opened the scroll, he found the
place where it was written:
“The Spirit
of Yahweh is upon me, because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the
poor; He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the
captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are
oppressed; to proclaim the year of favor of Yahweh.”
Then he
closed the scroll, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes
of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he said to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
The
words Jesus read are found in Isaiah
61:1-2a. This is what God anointed him to do.
● Preach
the gospel to the poor.
● Heal
the brokenhearted.
● Proclaim
liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind.
● Set
at liberty those who are oppressed.
● Proclaim
the year of favor of Yahweh.
Now we can update
our understanding of the words “Jesus the Anointed One.”
Jesus – The One called by God to preach the gospel to the poor, heal the
brokenhearted, proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the
blind, set at liberty those who are oppressed, and proclaim that the year of
favor of Yahweh has begun – Son of God.
Is
