years ago archaeologists surveying Piazza Venezia in the center of Rome for a
much-needed third subway line found the remains of an athenaeum built by the emperor
Hadrian in the
second century A.D. The brick manufacturers’ stamps confirmed that the arts
center was built in 123 A.D., 12 years earlier than first suggested based on
ancient documentary sources.
