Would
you log on the internet without a firewall on your computer? If you did, it
probably wouldn't be very long before you acquired new adware, malware, viruses
and who knows what else. A firewall protects your computer by checking incoming
data and blocking things that do not measure up to its standard.
Do
you have BS (Belief System) Firewall
for your mind? We are bombarded with an endless flow of information from the
moment we get up until we go to bed every day. A lot of people are trying to
get their info in our minds today, mostly because they want us to buy or
believe something. When it comes to religious
“truths” we need to turn on a BS Firewall before accept them. All we need to do
is ask one question about what we are being told:
Is it an
opinion, a belief or a fact?
Make
sure you understand the differences between the three options:
(1) Opinion - A view, judgment, or
appraisal formed in the mind
about a particular matter.
(2) Belief - A state or habit of mind in
which confidence in the truth, the existence, or the reliability of something
is placed, although without absolute
proof that one is right in doing so. Religious beliefs are based on claims of divine authority.
(3) Fact - The quality of being actual; something that has actual
existence; an actual occurrence; sensory
perceivable and measurable.
Religious
beliefs are not sensory perceivable and measurable like facts. This makes belief-based
truths very different from fact-based truths:
(1) Belief-based
truths are based on claims of divine
authority.
(2) Fact-based
truths are based on sensory perceivable and measurable observations.
When someone
tells you something is the truth – or – if you are telling someone that
something is the truth – find out which kind it is. If it is a
belief-based truth identify the authority it is based on.
We
created the BHC Truth Guideline
to help you keep you BS Firewall operating. You will
be amazed at how it can transform your Bible studies and religion dicussions.
My Belief System
will be large enough to include to facts.
It will be open
enough to be questioned or tested.
I will change my
Belief System when I discover error or new facts.
Don’t
you think that anyone that really want to know the truth should follow it? Of
course, there is another option – a lot
of people call it Blind Faith:
My Belief System
will ignore the facts.
I will not allow
my beliefs to be questioned or tested.
I will not change
my beliefs when I discover error or new facts.
We
are all believers because we simply do not have all of the facts about
everything. But, we have two choices about what kind of a believer we will be
-- uninformed
or informed. In this information age – why would anyone choose to be uninformed about something so important?
If you thing
being an informed believer is the best choice, let us know by “Liking” our
Facebook page by clicking here – please this with others too.
Shalom & Be Empowered!
