Learning How to Talk About the Gods in the Bible

Exploring the Stories of the Ten Commandments teaches us how to talk about “the gods” in those stories. I know that words “the gods” sounds strange to Christians and Jews today, but keep in mind that neither Christianity nor Rabbinic Judaism existed when the Torah scroll was written. Why did they lay their coats at Saul's feet?

The witnesses, laying their coats at the feet of Saul, were the men that would cast the first stones at Stephen in Acts 7. Why did they all lay their coats at Saul’s feet?
