King James I - Monopolies Seller

The English government was in financial turmoil when King James I discovered that he could make a tremendous amount of money by selling licenses for the exclusive public control of a product, a trade, or even a government service, like the inspection of tobacco or collection of customs. As one scholar reported, in the early seventeenth century a typical Englishman lived in a house built with monopoly bricks; heated by monopoly coal. His clothes are held up by monopoly belts, monopoly buttons, monopoly pins. He ate monopoly butter, monopoly currants, monopoly red herrings, monopoly salmon, and monopoly lobsters. The holders of monopolies had the exclusive right to sell these items and charged as much as people would pay for them.[i] Sound familiar?

Don’t forget that King James I was also responsible for the creation of the famous King James Version of the Bible, which is officially called the “Authorized Version.” Why did he want a new translation of the Bible? If his version was the “authorized” version, did the other translations become the “unauthorized” versions. Would that have given King James I a monopoly on the Bible too?

Why did they lay their coats at Saul's feet?

The witnesses, laying their coats at the feet of Saul, were the men that would cast the first stones at Stephen in Acts 7. Why did they all lay their coats at Saul’s feet? The Talmud contains a very interesting account of the act of stoning that may provide the answer. “When the trial was over, they take him [the condemned person] out to be stoned. The place of stoning was at a distance from the court, as it is said, ‘Take out the one who has cursed.’ [i] A man stands at the entrance of the court; in his hand is a signaling flag [Hebrew   sudarin = sudar , ‘scarf, sweater’]. A horseman was stationed far away but within sight of him. If one [of the judges] says, ‘I have something [more] to say in his favor,’ he [the signaler] waves the   sudarin , and the horseman runs and stops them [from stoning him]. Even if [the condemned person] himself says, ‘I have something to say in my favor,’ they bring him back, even four of five times, only provided that there is some substance to...

Deuteronomy and the Creation of Messianic Realities

Moses led the tribes of Israel to the place they stopped and could see the Promised Land. As they stood there, a cloud moved above the door of the Tabernacle. God would soon inaugurate Joshua to lead the people into their new homeland. But, only Moses heard what God said about the future of the new nation.
