His name was not Jesus Christ

Yeshua the Anointed One
Building a Biblical Vocabulary Series

For two billion Christians today, “Jesus Christ” are the two most important words in their Bibles. Many Americans view those the same way they view their own name – Jesus as a first name and Christ as a last name.

● “Jesus” is an English word and the letter “J” did not appear in the English alphabet until 1524 CE; it did not appear in print until 1634. His name was Yeshua and he was Jewish (b. 6 BCE and crucified abt. 27 CE).

● “Christ” is a transliteration of the ancient Greek word Χριστός, Christós, without the case ending. The Greek word means "anointed." The Greek word is a translation of the Hebrew מָשִׁיחַ (Māšîaḥ). It also means “anointed” and is can also be a title.

In relationship to the name Yeshua, “Christ” means “The Anointed One” and it is a title that means “Yeshua has been anointed by God to hold a specific office and do specific things.” Yeshua was not the first or last “Anointed One” in Jewish history.

● Aaron, the brother of Moses was anointed as a priest (Exodus 29:7).

● A priest that appears in Leviticus 4:5 was anointed one.

● The kings of Israel have been “anointed ones,” beginning with Saul (I Samuel 9:16).

● In the writings of the prophets and Daniel prophesies about another type of “Anointed One” appears. He will be a great political leader and descendant of King David (Jeremiah 23:5), called "mashiach ben David" (The Anointed One the Son of David). He will be well-versed in Jewish law, and observant of its commandments (Isaiah 11:2-5). He will be a charismatic leader, inspiring others to follow his example. He will be a great military leader, who will win battles for Israel. He will be a great judge, who makes righteous decisions (Jeremiah 33:15). He will appear at the End of Days and judge the nations.

Yeshua told people exactly which “Anointed One” he was (Isaiah 61:1-2):

“The Spirit of the Lord Yahweh is upon me because Yahweh has anointed me to proclaim the good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to declare liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound. To proclaim the year of acceptance of Yahweh. Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your ears. (Luke 4:16-21)

By simply calling him Yeshua the Anointed One, instead of Jesus Christ, reconnects him to his Jewish culture and recalls the mission he had been anointed by God to do.
